Summary: Since there has been a large number of migrants made unsanctioned crossings of the US-Canada border (40.000 crossed into Canada in 2023). Many of them are from Latin American countries like Venezuela and Colombia, as far away as Haiti and Afghanistan. Therefore, the US and Canadian authorities (the US president and the prime minister of Canada) have made an agreement to reject and stop the flow of unofficial border crossing from asylum seekers. From now on, migrants caught crossing anywhere along The US-Canada border now can be rejected and sent back to where they come from. This new act can close a loophole from the original act in 2004 (the Safe Third Country Act), which cannot allow either nation to turn migrants away at unofficial crossing points. However, many refugee advocates criticized the deal as an ineffective solution to the issues
Reaction: I personally have very little knowledge about US and Canadian politics. However, this particular matter seems to be very important. Those migrants and refugees are fleeing persecution, war, gang violence, and domestic turmoil. They are in urgent need of help and support. I understand that unofficial crossing border is illegal and it may lead to security concerns for a country.
Questions: Is there any other alternative to help those asylum seekers rather than reject them? Should they be helped even without illegally confirm?
Wow! I never heard that one until I found your blog. this matter is very interesting and important to know, they really need someone to help. I knew that it might not be good that if you’re illegal crossing border but for some reason it’s necessary to do so.
ReplyDeleteHi Max,
ReplyDeleteThank you for summarizing it easier than reading from the original one hehe! Well throughout your question, I believe there are more alternative policies to assist those asylum seekers for example: providing policy privilege tax special for them just in case to make them more concerned about living in the US or Canada and spreading to other countries.
Thank you Max.
Good post, Max.
